Course Details
Course Overview
AI for Healthcare in Microsoft 365 is a 12-hour applied programme for Australian healthcare staff who want to use Microsoft 365 Copilot productively without breaching patient privacy or professional obligations. The course covers where Copilot genuinely helps in healthcare (clinical documentation support, patient-education materials, internal communications, quality reporting, and policy or protocol updates) and the firm red-lines that protect patients. We explicitly address the Dragon Copilot situation: it is generally available in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Belgium, but it is still NOT generally available in Australia, so we recommend AU-hosted ambient scribe alternatives such as Heidi Health and Lyrebird Health for any clinical-conversation transcription. Availability is re-verified against Microsoft product documentation before every cohort. The Copilot Health platform launched in March 2026 and we walk through what is and is not available to Australian tenants today. Every module is grounded in AHPRA AI Guidance, the ADHA AI Transparency Statement, Privacy Act 1988 sensitive-information rules, APP 8 cross-border disclosure obligations, the My Health Records Act 2012, and the ACSC Information Security Manual. You leave with a personal Copilot operating model, a healthcare red-lines card, and a sandbox of safe prompt patterns you can take back to your team.
What You'll Learn
Course Curriculum
Module 1: Healthcare processes and AI opportunities
120 min- Where AI genuinely helps in healthcare: clinical documentation support, patient-education materials, internal comms, quality reporting, and policy or protocol updates
- Dragon Copilot regional availability, re-verified before each cohort — generally available in the US, UK, IE, and BE but still NOT generally available in Australia, with AU-hosted alternatives Heidi Health and Lyrebird Health recommended for ambient scribing
- Copilot Health platform (launched March 2026) — what features Australian tenants can use today and what remains region-locked
- The AHPRA accountability framework — the registered practitioner remains accountable for every AI-assisted output
- High-risk versus low-risk Copilot use cases mapped to clinical, quality, and administrative roles
- Reference: AHPRA — Meeting your professional obligations when using Artificial Intelligence in healthcare (2024-25)
Module 2: Beginner — AI for day-to-day healthcare tasks
120 min- Using Copilot in Word, Outlook, Teams, and OneNote for safe, non-clinical tasks
- Drafting patient-education wording based on official guidelines (for example RACGP, NPS MedicineWise, healthdirect) — never from real patient records
- Summarising meeting notes about clinical-practice updates, governance discussions, and policy changes
- Writing internal FAQs, checklists, and flowcharts for non-clinical staff onboarding and procedure updates
- The core rule for beginners: never type real patient identifiers, MRNs, diagnoses, medications, or treatment plans into Copilot prompts
- Reference: Microsoft Learn — Microsoft 365 Copilot for Healthcare overview (current)
Module 3: Medium — AI for reporting, protocols, and knowledge sharing
140 min- Using Copilot in Excel and SharePoint to explain de-identified quality and safety metrics to clinical and executive audiences
- Generating template clinical-pathway descriptions from anonymised steps drawn from approved protocols, not raw charts
- Scrubbing patient identifiers (names, DOBs, MRNs, Medicare numbers, addresses) before any content goes near a Copilot prompt
- Basing prompts on policy documents, clinical guidelines, and de-identified aggregated reporting — never on individual patient charts
- Aggregated reporting patterns: cohort-level summaries, trend narratives, and exception explanations that protect re-identification risk
- Reference: OAIC — De-identification and the Privacy Act (current guidance)
Module 4: Advanced — Copilots, workflows, and ecosystems
120 min- Healthcare agent service in Copilot Studio (GA) — connecting agents to FHIR data through Azure Health Data Services
- Building clinical-support copilots in Teams that surface approved protocols, drug references, and escalation pathways
- SharePoint-backed policy knowledge bases as the grounding source for healthcare agents (versioned, approved, owned)
- Light integration patterns with EHR exports using anonymised summaries only — NEVER live patient charts or identifiable records
- Hosting agents and FHIR services in Australia East with appropriate data residency and IRAP controls
- Reference: Microsoft Learn — Healthcare agent service and Azure Health Data Services (current)
Module 5: Governance, ethics, and data safety — Healthcare red-lines
220 min- Tenant geography requirement — Microsoft 365 and Azure workloads handling Australian health information should be hosted in Australia East or Australia Southeast
- IRAP PROTECTED assessment expectations for sensitive healthcare workloads and the controls that follow
- AHPRA AI Guidance accountability, transparency, and audit-trail requirements for registered practitioners
- Privacy Act 1988 sensitive-information rules — health information is sensitive information and attracts heightened protection
- APP 8 cross-border disclosure obligations and why tenant geography and sub-processor lists matter
- My Health Records Act 2012 secondary-use prohibition — MHR data must NEVER be fed to LLMs outside an ADHA-compliant pathway
- ADHA AI-enabled Care Committee model and the AI Transparency Statement expectations for healthcare providers
- Healthcare red-lines card — no real names, MRNs, Medicare numbers, diagnoses, mental-health notes, child-safety information, or family-violence disclosures in any Copilot prompt
- Safe substitution patterns — replace identifiers with "Patient A", "Record 123", "an Australian regional hospital", or "a metropolitan ED"
- Shadow-AI breach risk — research indicates roughly 20% of organisations have experienced an incident linked to unsanctioned AI use; controls and detection patterns to reduce that risk
- LLM data poisoning research (Nature Medicine 2025) and why grounding sources, version control, and review matter in clinical contexts
- Healthcare-specific sandbox cases — practical scenarios across clinician, quality, admin, and digital health roles
- Role-based awareness — separate guidance for clinician, administration, and digital health audiences with tailored red-lines
- Reference: ADHA — AI Transparency Statement and AI-enabled Care Committee; OAIC — Privacy Act 1988 sensitive information guidance; ACSC ISM (current release)
